Our Ancestors said, “A fault confessed is half redressed.” We, as Turkey, started the production of vermicompost very late, but this is not a deficiency. Actually, I look at it as a win because we have the opportunity to examine the results of thousands of researches so far, we can look at these applications and benefit from the research. Increasing need for food in proportion to the rapid population growth in many settlements around the world causes an increase in agricultural activities on agricultural lands. The excessive and unconscious use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides in the traditional agricultural production system causes both environmental and soil problems. This situation reveals that agriculture using only chemical fertilizers and pesticides is not enough to be sustainable and innovations should be made in today’s agriculture.
Vermicompost is a product obtained as a result of the composting of various organic wastes by some earthworms during their digestion and used as organic fertilizer and soil conditioner in the agricultural industry.
In addition, vermicompost provides plant growth regulating effect, the ability to develop biological resistance in plants, the ability to reduce pest attacks and the ability to suppress plant diseases. In our country, vermicompost can be produced within the scope of the Regulation on Organic, Mineral and Microbial Fertilizers Used in Agriculture, which was published in the Official Gazette dated 23 February 2018 and numbered 30341. However, our people, especially our farmers, need encouragement and awareness in this regard. In addition to being a good soil conditioner, vermicompost is an organic fertilizer that increases the productivity, quality and durability of plants and makes them resistant to diseases and pests with its strong root structure. In addition to high organic matter, phosphorus and potassium with total nitrogen availability, it is also rich in all macro and micro nutrients suitable for other plants. It is 100% organic and environmentally friendly.
